A Documentary Film of the Groundbreaking Radio Station in Pittsburgh, PA
WAMO: The Sound of the Steel City is a feature-length documentary film for Pittsburgh, PA’s prominent radio station, WAMO, and its significance in the Black community. Directed by Tashee “TeeJay” Johnson, the film highlights WAMO’s cultural impact through exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes stories, and rare archival footage, as told by some of the legendary organization’s top talent and community leaders. This powerful film will also serve as a tribute to Pittsburgh’s urban legacy and a heartfelt gift to generations who grew up with WAMO as the soundtrack to their lives.
For over 70 years, WAMO (105.9/106.7 JAMZ) stood as a legendary urban radio station rooted in the heart of Pittsburgh. Known as the rhythm and voice of the city’s Black community, WAMO wasn’t just a station — it was a cultural institution. It shaped musical taste, amplified community voices, and created a shared soundtrack for generations!
